Progressive Lenses Q & A
Progressive lenses, also called no-line bifocals or trifocals, are eyeglasses lenses that correct near, intermediate, and far vision all in one line-free lens. Because progressive lenses lack sharp boundaries, they offer the same advantages of bifocals and trifocals in an easier-to-use way.
Progressive lenses are highly customized, with every lens made just for your prescriptions. Most progressive lenses can fit into nearly any of the different fashionable and traditional glasses frames available at Eyes On Park.
You can also opt for special treatments on your lenses, for example, a scratch-resistant coating if you’re hard on your glasses or if you have a very active lifestyle.
You might need progressive lenses if you have two or more prescriptions. Virtually everyone who wears progressive lenses is an adult. Most people experience presbyopia (difficulty seeing things close-up) starting around age 40. That leads to needing both a distance and a near vision prescription.
You can manage that in a few ways, including swapping between regular glasses and reading glasses — which is incredibly inconvenient — or wearing bifocals that divide glasses lenses in half. Trifocals do the same thing, with an added specific prescription for intermediate vision in the middle.
The sharp lines on bifocals and trifocals can make for very abrupt visual transitions, and many people dislike the prominent lines on the lenses because they’re so closely associated with aging. If you struggle with either or both of these issues, progressive lenses could be perfect for you.
Progressive lenses essentially correct your vision from top to bottom. At the top of the lens, you have the distance prescription. That gradually changes into intermediate vision correction in the center of the lens, and that changes to close-up vision correction in the bottom part of the lens.
After you wear progressive lenses for a short time, your brain adapts to the new viewing scheme. You’ll learn where to look automatically, based on your visual needs at that moment.
Progressive lenses can give you freedom from bifocals or constant glasses swapping. To learn more about progressive lenses, schedule your comprehensive eye exam at Eyes On Park by phone or book an appointment through the online scheduler now.
